ABOUT LIBRARY

The library of the Institute of English Studies is made up of:

In the Lending Library you can borrow books. There are three computer workstations that can be used for searching the library catalogues, including the book catalogue, the journals and periodicals catalogue and POLANKA Central Catalogue for English Studies.

To order a book, you must know the book's title, author and shelf mark. Please use the computer catalogue to find the information you need. In our library we do not use order forms, all you have to do is to note down the title, author and location code of the book(s) on a piece of paper.

In the computer catalogue we use the following abbreviations:

To check if the book you want to borrowed is available please find the book's catalogue description in the catalogue and press '?' [the question mark].You will see 'data wypozyczenia' ('date of borrowing' and 'przewidywana data zwrotu' (due date) on the screen. If there is a sign '---' next to Data wypożyczenia the book is available. If there are dates next to Data wypożyczenia i Przewidywana data zwrotu , the book is borrowed by another reader. We advise you to note down the due date to know when the book should return to the library. You can also place a reservation with the librarian (Please bear in mind that the [set] books are not subject to reservation.).

Once you have consulted the computer catalogue please go to the counter and place your order with the librarian. You will need your valid Warsaw University Library reader's card to borrow books. Please bear in mind that if the books you ordered are kept in the storeroom you will probably have to wait some time before they are delivered.

Entering the Reading Room you are required to leave your bag and overcoat in the cloakroom. Then you should go to the librarian's desk and give the librarian your Warsaw University reader's card or ID. The librarian will assign you a seat and give you a seat card. Please seat on the seat assigned to you. You are not allowed to eat, drink and use your mobile phone in the library. You are requested to switch off the sound in your mobile phone before entering the Reading Room.

The Reading Room holds approximately 5000 books divided by subject. The books and periodicals are on open access. The books held in the Reading Room have their own location codes consisting of Roman numerals (for stack number) followed by Arabic numerals (for shelf number) i.e. XVIII/3 (means stack number 18, shelf number 3) Please use the computer workstation located in the Reading Room to find the location codes. You can also use this workstation to consult the catalogue of M.A. theses and other library catalogues.

You can borrow most books for a short time in order to make a copy. The books coded with yellow tape on their spines cannot be borrowed. The books can also be borrowed overnight, for weekends and holidays at the discretion of the librarian. Please return the books on time to the reading room as a failure to do so will result in blocking your reader's account.

The ELT Collection holds sets of books that can be borrowed for Practical English Classes, such as dictionaries, reference books and course books. The ELT collection also holds cassettes with recordings that can be used during PE classes.

As in the case of the Reading Room books, it is possible to borrow these materials for a short time in order to copy the fragments needed. There is also a small reading room there, intended both to encourage students and teachers alike to make use of its cassette collections, and to store these teaching resources. The cassettes can be listened to (the place is equipped with tapes, tape recorders and earphones), and recorded onto the cassettes brought by individual users.
